5 Steps For Achieving Great Client–Builder Communication

We have all heard the saying ‘communication is key’ and that especially suited in the construction industry. Imagine choosing a builder for your dream home but they are not communicating with you. ‘What is happening next? Have there been any changes to my completion date or cost? There is nothing worse than uncertainty when it comes to the construction of your new home. Within the blog, we will address the best ways to achieve a great communication practice with your builder.

“Open and honest communication with your client is one of the keys to business success.” – Fair Trade

So, how do we master the fear of poor communication between a client and their builder?

We have discovered 5 important areas to ensure there is positive and constructive communication throughout the duration of your build.

  1. Positive Client Relationships

When choosing a builder for your dream home you are not only choosing someone to build your home but also choosing a person that will (ideally) be in constant communication with you for several months. For this reason, it is essential for a builder and their team to develop a strong rapport with their clients.

Once a positive relationship is developed it allows for the building process to become more seamless, as the client can comfortably voice their concerns and opinions to their builder. It is important to feel heard and your opinions valued throughout the whole building process!

  1. Full transparency

“The smaller the level of client surprise and the greater the level of client satisfaction” -Winch

When it comes to building your new home, it goes without saying that we want our builder to be transparent and honest. When selecting materials and products there is a chance this may alter the overall spend of the project. Maybe you decided you want a feature door that costs more than the quoted amount? At this point this is where transparency is required. Have the discussion about if you are happy with the change in the quoted price or potentially the areas where costs can be saved to compensate.

  1. Regular Updates

Maybe you have spoken with your builder a few times, but is it as regular as it should be?

Throughout the construction process, a lot can happen over a short period of time. It is essential to arrange for site meetings or a phone call, around once a week to ensure you are up to date and aware of how everything is progressing.

  1. Right Communication Method

In the early stages of your building process, it is important to identify your ideal communication method. Maybe you prefer regular emails as you like to view your updates after work. Or you may prefer phone calls to address any questions you may have on the spot.

Whatever method is most suited to you, make it known to your builder to ensure you are able to communicate effectively throughout the duration of the build.

  1. A Platform

As we are living in a digital age it is beneficial for a building company to have an online communication platform. This is a way to receive regular updates, progress shots and notifications when information or a selection is required.

A 24/7 project management software is an ideal way to stay informed anywhere in the world at any time.
